Sturgis wildlife group report on year’s activities

Rob Wilcott, president of the Sturgis branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, acknowledged committee members, hunters and fisherman while reporting on the branch’s activities for the year at the branch’s annual awards supper at the Sturgis Community Hall on April 16.

A funding agreement was reached with the Preeceville branch that allows active members of their branch to access the local gun range, said Wilcott.

The club leased some of its land to Peniuk Farms, he said. In the fall, the branch hosted an NHL hockey draft which concluded recently. Brian and Austin Morken won first place in the draft, followed by Conrad and Kristen Peterson and Nick Lesanko.

In December, the branch hosted an antler scoring evening with 23 sets of antlers scored, said Wilcott. The SWF hosted its annual convention in February at Yorkton. Funding was provided to the youth camp and to the Hanin Creek Educational facility located at Candle Lake. The branch donated $500 towards the Sturgis Hall.

The branch was commended for providing in excess of $10,000 in donations to the Wildlife Habitat Trust Fund. Youth camps are geared to run from July 17 to 23 for girls and from July 23-29 for boys, all aged 12-15 years.

"To ensure the wildlife legacy we leave our children surpasses that which we inherited is the greatest challenge we as members face today,” said Wilcott. “Only time will tell if we succeed. I believe that contributing to the Habitat Trust land acquisition is a very positive endeavour."
