The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 41 calls during the week of September 17 to September 24, some of which included: two traffic accidents, 23 traffic offences, four other provincial statutes, one other statute, one assault, two thefts under $5,000, one mischief, one fraud, one break-and-enter, and five other offences.
Philippines fraud
On September 18, the Canora-Sturgis Detachment received a fraud complaint that money had been sent to the Philippines. Police learned the victim had been extorted into sending money to prevent embarrassing photographs being released to family and friends. Fraudsters outside of Canada use social media platforms to impersonate men and women in attempt to gain a victim’s trust and groom a relationship to extort money out of the unsuspecting victims.
Keys RM theft
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a report of a break-and-enter to a home in the RM of Keys on September 19. Numerus items were stolen. Police continue to investigate.
Suspicious vehicle
On September 19, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a white SUV driving into a farmyard in the RM of Buchanan and leaving, only to come back 30 minutes later. The complainant did not know who the driver was or reasoning for the suspicious behaviour. Canora/Sturgis Detachment wants to remind the public to contact police if they come across any suspicious people or vehicles.
Worksite theft
On September 21, Canora/Sturgis RCMP attended a worksite near Tadmore to investigate mischief and theft to a work vehicle. Police continues to investigate.
Canora dog
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP Detachment received a report of an aggressive dog in Canora on September 22. It’s alleged an unknown black-and-white dog entered the yard of the complainant and attacked their dog. The aggressive dog fled the area prior to police arrival.
Dog owners are accountable for the actions and behaviour of their pets. Owners of aggressive dogs can be held liable for vet bills and could be charged and summoned under provincial legislation to appear before a judge in provincial court.
Threats to property
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of uttering threats to property on September 24 in the RM of Insinger. The complainant had received disturbing messages from a person known to them. RCMP continue to investigate.
Illegal hunting
Saskatchewan conservation officers continue to work in the area to check on hunters and respond to illegal hunting complaints. Canora-Sturgis RCMP work alongside conservation officers to ensure compliance with both provincial and federal legislation. Failing to comply with directions of a conservation officer is an offence which could lead to fines, arrest and even criminal charges.
