Canora/Sturgis RCMP Detachment activity report for May 14 to May 21

The Canora/ Sturgis RCMP responded to 68 calls for service during the reporting period, some of which included 20 traffic offenses, eight Provincial Statutes, five thefts, four mischiefs, four assaults, two impaired drivers, two break and enters, and one arson.

On May 14 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP along with Canora Fire Department responded to a complaint of a yard fire on Highway 229 near Good Spirit Lake. The Canora Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire. This fire flared up again on May 16 at around 10 a.m. but at this time it is not clear if the previous fire ignited again or if the fire was restarted. Residents from Sandy Beach and Burgis Beach had to be evacuated on May 17 due to safety concerns. The Canora, Rhein, and Ebenezer Fire Departments, with assistance from Heli-Lift International Helicopter service fought this fire until it was eventually controlled late on May 17 and residents were able to return to their homes. It was estimated that this fire burned approximately 4,000 acres. 

A huge thank you to everyone the assisted and helped get this fire under control before any homes were lost. The RCMP would also like to advise that no injuries were reported during this incident. On May 14 a male was pulled over by Canora/Sturgis RCMP when he was driving erratically. Upon investigation it was determined that the male was suspended from driving and the vehicle was not registered. The male was arrested and was in unlawful possession of several firearms as well as methamphetamine. He was arrested and lodged in RCMP cells before making his first court appearance in Yorkton Provincial Court.

On May 14 an adult male was arrested on Main Street in Canora for being intoxicated in public.  It is believed that this male was high on an intoxicating substance and was yelling at the RCMP Detachment and was paranoid to the point that he thought the RCMP had someone locked in the trunk of their vehicle during the incident. The male was arrested and lodged in RCMP cells until he was sober.

On May 14 the Canora RCMP received several complaints from various individuals at Good Spirit Acres advising that young children were driving golf carts on public roads. The Canora RCMP would like to remind the public that golf carts are not permitted to be driven on any public roads and this is even more dangerous if the individuals are young and do not hold a valid drivers licence. Although young persons under the age of 12 are not able to be charged the RCMP can impound golf carts or any other motorized or electric vehicle that is driven on a public road.

On May 16 the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP had an adult male evade police while driving a motor vehicle in the town of Preeceville. The adult male ran several stop signs within town limits while failing to pullover for police. This male was identified by RCMP and will be facing several provincial and federal driving charges.

On the early morning of May 18 an intoxicated adult male was attacked and assaulted in Canora by an unknown male. The intoxicated male suffered several injuries which included a broken jaw, broken wrist, and a 5 cm laceration to his face. This investigation is currently ongoing. On May 18 the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP received a call from a 76-year-old male in Preeceville who had lumber and a 20-foot ladder stolen from his yard on Second Avenue Northwest. This investigation is currently ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Canora/Sturgis RCMP.

On May 18 the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP responded to a domestic dispute in the town of Sturgis. Two adult males were arguing and a third adult in the house was afraid the situation was going to become physical if the parties were not separated. RCMP attended and were able to remove one of the adult males from the residence to avoid further problems.

The Canora/ Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of three piers being stolen from the Canora Beach over the past winter. This investigation is currently ongoing.
