The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 36 calls during the week of December 3 to December 10, some of which included: one traffic accident, six traffic offences, one municipal bylaw, three impaired drivers, eight other provincial statutes, two other criminal code incidents, one sexual assault, one uttering threats, two assaults, one theft under $5,000, three mischiefs and one break-and-enter.
Canora break-in
On December 4, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a break and enter on Railway Avenue in Canora. There were damages caused and several items stolen. The investigation is still ongoing.
Hit and run
A hit and run in front of the town office on Main Street in Canora was reported on December 5. A newer red Dodge Ram 1500 had the rear passenger side bumper struck by another vehicle. RCMP are looking to speak with the driver involved or any witnesses to this incident.
Mental health issues
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint on December 5 of an adult female suffering with mental health issues in Canora. RCMP attended and arrested the female under the Mental Health Act. The female was transported to the Yorkton hospital for a mental health assessment.
Sturgis fire
On December 6th, Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a structure fire in Sturgis on Weikle Avenue. RCMP and Sturgis Fire Department attended. The fire was determined not to be suspicious. Sturgis FD was able to put out the fire.
Sheep on the loose
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of sheep in the ditch on Highway No. 49 near Ketchen on December 6.
Suspicious behaviour
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint on December 6 of a suspicious person in the Preeceville RM who was taking photographs of a property. The vehicle then fled the area. RCMP were unable to locate the suspicious person or vehicle. The person was described as a Caucasian male wearing a cowboy hat and driving a white 2001 Crown Victoria.
Canora collision
On December 7, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a hit and run on Main Street in Canora in front of the RCMP detachment. A white Ford truck was side swiped by a yellow vehicle causing damages to the rear of the driver’s side. RCMP are looking to speak with the driver of the other vehicle involved or any witnesses to this incident.
Truck in field
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report on December 9 of a male operating a pickup truck in a farmer’s field behind Daniels Drive in Canora. Members attended and located this same vehicle swerving all over a grid road south of Canora. Police pulled the vehicle over and found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and taken back to Canora Detachment for investigation. The driver provided breath samples of 320mg%. The legal limit to drive is 80mg% (.08). Police ensured the driver received medical attention due to the very high and dangerous alcohol level in the driver’s blood.
Assistance required
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP are looking for the public's assistance with the following crime; between August and October a residence on Canora Avenue was broken into and had several items stolen. Some of the items include: household electronics, a kitchen table set and a steel bed frame.
