The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 74 calls during the week of May 6 to May 13, some of which included: two traffic accidents, 27 provincial traffic offenses, 12 other provincial statutes, five harassments/threats, two mischiefs, and nine other incidents.
911 mischief
On May 6, an unknown individual made a 911 hang-up call from a pay phone in Canora. Members of the Canora/Sturgis RCMP attended the location of the pay phone but were unable to locate the call maker.
Illegal cannabis seller
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint on May 7 of a young male on a bike in downtown Canora attempting to sell cannabis to unsuspecting members of the public. The male was described as having a ponytail and wearing glasses. Police want to remind the public that it is still illegal to purchase/sell cannabis outside of a licenced cannabis store.
Suspicious vehicle
Canora/Sturgis members responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in Mikado on May 7. Police attended but the vehicle had already left the area.
Fight
On May 9, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report of an assault that occurred following an altercation between two males at a location south of Canora. Police continue to investigate the incident.
Dangerous grass fire
A downed power line started a grass fire south of Canora along Highway No. 9 on May 9. Prior to the Canora Fire Department arriving at the scene, a crew from CN Rail jumped into action and were able to stop and control the movement of the fire before it could reach a nearby business. The efforts of the CN Rail crew helped contain the fire and prevent a possible structure fire.
Multiple fires
On May 10, Canora/Sturgis RCMP assisted the Canora Fire Department with a vehicle fire in the RM of Keys. The Canora/Sturgis RCMP also assisted the Sturgis Fire Department with a structure fire in Crystal Lake.
Cannabis container disposal
An empty cannabis container was found in the ditch in the RM of Preeceville on May 10. The complainant was advised that the container can be thrown in the garbage. Although possession of Cannabis is legal, littering is not.
Animal carcasses found
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded on May 10 to a complaint of animal carcasses being found on a portion of land in the RM of Keys. Police investigated the matter and were able to determine the origin of the carcasses and that no criminal offence had occurred.
Mask refusal
On May 11, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint from a business in Canora concerning an individual refusing to wear a mask. Police attended and were able to resolve the complaint.
Downtown camping
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a male camping in a tent in downtown Preeceville on May 11. Police attended and spoke with the male who relocated to a more appropriate camping area.
Feuding neighbours
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded on May 12 to a report of a disturbance involving feuding neighbours in Sturgis. The matter was resolved prior to police intervention.
