Community members were treated to a special evening of sampling foods representing many countries during the Preeceville and District Heritage Museum ethnic dessert evening held at the Preeceville Club 60 on September 25. The event coincided with culture days.
The evening featured artifacts on display from six different cultures that included: Ukrainian, English, German, Sweden, Russian and Norwegian. The many desserts were ethnic culture sweets from other nations across the world. Individuals were encouraged to dress up in ethnic costumes and hats from eras gone by.
Eugene Boychuk won for the best-dressed male as he was dressed in Ukrainian wear. Gloria Daschiuk won the random draw for best dressed-female.
The museum members served coffee, tea, rhurbarb punch and orange punch beverages to those who attended the evening. The evening was also in celebration of Saskatchewan Culture Day, the museums 10th anniversary celebration and annual windup.
“The museum first began in 2005 but did not have the ribbon-cutting ceremony until 2006,” said Agnes Murrin. “It began with 15 rooms and has continued to expand and improve through the years to incorporate 25 rooms today.
“The clay oven was added in 2009. The two original founding members are Nellie Long and Joyce Gulka,” she said. “We closed for the season on September 27 but we are still open for private tours. We have added three new rooms this year that included, a electronic room, 1950s room and beauty/washing room.
Joe Luciw has been a huge asset as the museums handyman. Next year we want to continue expanding the three rooms and better utilize the lobby area to plan fun things for the community. We are also looking for more artifacts for the ’50s room, toys for the children’s room and are looking forward to adding to the fashion room and updating the souvenir base. Our goal is to keep the museum updated, rearranged and fresh.
“Locals artists also have their collections on display at the museum,” she said.
