Marjorie Blackburn of Sylvan Lake, Alta., representative for In Touch Ministries, collected the blankets and quilts that were sewn by the Klothes for Kids project in Sturgis on November 21.
The items were stuffed into four large suitcases and a duffle bag (made with donated fabric.) She will accompany the bags when In Touch Ministries members travel to their orphanage/school in mid-January 2019, stated Barbara Duke, one of the organizers.
Klothes for Kids is a group of grandmothers who sew dresses and shorts for children in impoverished countries around the world. Since 2014 club members have been sewing blankets for orphanages in less fortunate countries.
Since then the ladies quilted, sewed and gathered many blankets and quilts for this cause. They are able to use generously donated fabric that isn’t generally preferred for sewing dresses and shorts.
The Klothes for Kids is a missionary project comprised of an interdenominational group of women working towards sewing clothes for children in developing nations..
"We are an interdenominational group of ladies from across the region who meet in the basement of the Roman Catholic Church in Sturgis every Wednesday," said Anita Desroches, one of the organizers in a previous Preeceville Progress article.
The Sturgis Catholic Women's League sponsors the project through shopping fees for needed items including thread, trim and the original start-up costs.
“Our mission is to bring joy to needy children by showing them that someone they do not know cares enough to make them a pretty dress, a pair of colourful shorts or a warm blanket," said Duke.
The project uses fabric that might have otherwise ended up in the landfill. The supplies used come from generous donations by community members.
