Kennedy Kosheluk of Preeceville is a step closer to attaining her dream of becoming a professional pianist. She was recently accepted into the Department of Music program at the University of Saskatchewan.

"The first step was an audition on March 4 in Saskatoon," said Kosheluk. "It was a huge step for me. I selected two musical pieces to play for my audition that I felt most comfortable with playing. I selected to play Sonata B Minor, Hob.xVI 32 and November by Tchaikovsky."

"After the audition I still had to face the interview process," she said. "The judges assessed me on my music theory, an essay of ambition, a musical resume and two letters of recommendation," she said.

Kosheluk has achieved a Grade 10 level in piano and has been playing piano since she was six years old. She has not always wanted to make music her career; originally she had wanted to be a journalist but her passion for music changed her mind.

"I grew up in a family of musicians," she said. "We always played together and my love for music has evolved.

“My mother Karolyn Kosheluk was my first piano teacher and through the years I have had several gifted teachers. Alina Havrylyuk, who was an accomplished pianist, was a great influence. Jillian Rice of Canora was also another great coach who helped me achieve greater goals. Bonnie Nicholson of the faculty of music at the University of Saskatchewan has been the biggest influence in my journey. Nathan Seghers, who is the band teacher with Good Spirit School Division, has been a help with this entire process," she said.

Kosheluk has achieved many scholarships through her career which have included for her performance at the Parkland Music Festival for numerous years. She has been recommended for provincials at the music festival. She also has the ability to play other musical instruments, including the mandolin and guitar, but her passion is the piano.

Her future goals are to graduate with a bachelor in music degree and to open her own piano studio to teach others.
