On Friday, Gov.-Gen. David Johnston awarded 41 Medals of Bravery and two Stars of Courage. Four of the bravery medals went to Saskatchewan people at Rideau Hall at Ottawa on October 28. From left, were: Lorne Matsalla and Dianne Matsalla, both of Rama; Gov.-Gen. David Johnston and Geraldine Shewchuk and Phillip Shewchuk, both of Rama, who had posed for a photo after presentation of the bravery medals.

After a farmer was shot near Rama on July 27, 2010, four people came to his rescue, even though there was a risk of being shot themselves, said a press release.

Dianne and Lorne Matsalla and Geraldine and Phillip Shewchuk, all of Rama, who were recognized for their bravery, were among 43 people honoured for their courage by Gov.-Gen. David Johnston in Ottawa Friday morning, said information on the website of the Governor-General.

In the Rama case, the victim, Greg Bugera, had been working in a field near Rama in 2010 when an assailant Rodney Hanishewskisuddenly fired his rifle at him. According to a summary of the incident provided by the Governor General's office, the Matsallas and the Shewchuks quickly drove out to the victim's location.

“We were all very honoured to be presented such an amazing award,” said Phillip Shewchuk. “We never thought of putting our own lives at risk. We knew we had to help Greg.

“It all started when Lorne Matsalla received a chilling phone call that Greg had been shot,” Shewchuk said. “His whereabouts were not known as his phone call was cut short.

“We jumped into action and found Greg hiding on the next quarter over. It was a sight I will never forget. He was covered in blood. We all will never forget that day,” said Shewchuk.

“Getting the award was a experience of a lifetime and to be able to shake hands and have the Governor General give us each a hug was amazing,” he said.

"Unaware of the shooter's whereabouts and at risk of being shot themselves, they tracked down the victim, helped him into one of the vehicles and drove him to safety," the summary said.

A man who turned out to be a neighbour of the victim with a grudge over a land dispute was later arrested.

Court heard the accused, Rodney Hanishewski, fired multiple shots, hitting the victim in the shoulder.

Hanishewski pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted murder and was sentenced to nine years at the Regional Psychiatric Centre.

The four Saskatchewan rescuers received the medal of bravery in recognition of bravery in hazardous circumstances.

Decorations for bravery recognize people who risked their lives to try to save or protect another. The decorations were created by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1972. The governor general personally presents the decorations in ceremonies held at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, or at La Citadelle, in Québec City. They consist of the Cross of Valour, the Star of Courage and the Medal of Bravery.
