Preeceville rinks grabbed the top two spots in the Canora Mixed Bonspiel held on March 29 and 30.

The eight team bonspiel was the final event of the curling season at the Canora Curling Club, and featured six teams from Canora and two from Preeceville. The Brandon Draw points scoring system was used to declare the winners after each team played three games. The winning team in each game received 10 points, with each team picking up five points in case of a tie. For each end where points are scored, that team received two points.

The first place Preeceville team was made of: Perry Pasiechnik (skip), Laura Pasiechnik (third), Minnie Zimmer (second) and Agnes Dubelt (lead.)

The second place team, also of Preeceville, included: Nick Bodnar (skip), Blaine Medlang (second), Joanne Boechler (second) and Phil Murrin (lead.)

Canora rinks participating in the bonspiel were: Don Probe, James Trofimenkoff, Vern Schick, Ron Hoehn, Brigitte Herriges and Bob Kolodziejski.

After the last bonspiel of the season ended, Aaron Herriges, director of leisure services, said it’s been a great year for curling in Canora with increased participation over previous years.

In addition to the windup bonspiel, other bonspiels included: Christmas, Junior, Senior, Mens, Ladies and Town and Country.

Seniors drop in curling had 32 to 64 weekly participants. Youth curling had 17 curlers registered and there were 32 registered for the open league competition.

Herriges said there is always room for more people to get involved in the future.

“If anyone is interested the club has sliders and brooms to use. You just need clean shoes,” he explained. “We have a top notch facility with a great volunteer base and excellent ice makers.  The Canora Curling Club looks to improve numbers in the years to come by bringing new people to the rink because it’s an excellent activity for all ages during the long winter months. It was great to see many youth taking advantage of the opportunity to curl this year.”
