The Canora Supers ended the regular season with three road games, and won two out of the three to clinch first place in the Southeast Senior Baseball League’s regular season, along with home field advantage for the upcoming playoffs.

The Supers started the road trip with the one-hour drive to Melville on July 12 to take on the Parkland Pirates. It was a close game all the way through, but the Supers took advantage of several Pirate miscues, and in the end put up a few crooked numbers on the scoreboard in a 12 to 8 victory, according to Greg Andreychuk, player/coach.

“The offence tallied 14 hits, highlighted by a pair from Supers rookie call-up Logan Wolkowski from the Parkland 18U AA Expos,” said Andreychuk. “He also played well at second base in his Supers debut. Kholton Shewchuk filled up the stat sheet with a single and two doubles to go along with two runs scored and five runs batted in. Kody Rock had a pair of singles, two runs and two stolen bases. Greg Pelechaty chipped in with a double and two singles, while Jayden Heskin added a double and two runs scored. Greg Andreychuk, Darcy Blommaert, and Taber Ebert each contributed one hit apiece.”

Darcy Blommaert pitched five innings and gave up five runs (four earned) with five strikeouts, resulting in a no decision. Jayden Heskin took over on the mound for the sixth inning and recorded the win, while Greg Pelechaty pitched a scoreless seventh inning to slam the door for the save. The win improved the Supers record to 7 and 1 on the season.

The Supers closed out the regular season with games in Yorkton versus the Marlins on July 14 and 15. The objective was simple: win one game and clinch first place. And the Supers did just that by winning 10 to 3 in the first contest against the Marlins.

It was ace versus ace, as the Supers sent Kody Rock to the mound in a matchup with Tanner Nesbitt. “Both pitchers were throwing very well, but a comedy of Marlins errors led to their demise late to seal the Supers victory,” reported Andreychuk. “Rock was the star of the game, as he gave up only three runs (one earned) in seven innings while striking out 14. He was just as dominant with the bat, going four for five with a massive home run, three singles, three steals, and four runs scored.”

Travis Mentanko had a good game at the plate with a pair of singles, while Zach Rakochy, Kholton Shewchuk, Sean Kolodziejski, and Greg Pelechaty each came through with a single. Derek Palagian was a perfect one for one with three walks and two runs scored.

With home field advantage clinched, the Supers played a much less intense game the next evening in Yorkton, going down to the Marlins in a 10 to 2 defeat.

“Jayden Heskin of Norquay got his first start on the hill in over two years, and struggled to find his groove as he pitched one-and-one-third innings, allowing five hits, six walks, eight runs (six earned) with one strikeout to take the loss,” said Andreychuk. “Greg Pelechaty came on in relief and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in two-and-two-thirds innings with two strikeouts. Kholton Shewchuk pitched the final two scoreless innings and racked up three strikeouts.”

The Supers scored two runs in the top of the first, but that was all the offence for the game. Zach Rakochy led the way with three hits. Travis Mentanko, Kholton Shewchuk and Heskin each had a double, while Logan Wolkowski extended his hitting streak to two games with a single

Playoffs were scheduled to start the week of July 19 vs the Parkland Pirates, with dates to be announced.
