The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 33 calls during the week of November 12 to November 19, some of which included: five traffic accidents, nine traffic offences, one impaired driver, one municipal bylaw, five other provincial statutes, three other criminal code incidents, one uttering threats, one forgery, one assault, one theft under $5,000, one mischief, two frauds and three other incidents.
Vehicle rollover
On November 12, Canora/Sturgis RCMP, Canora Fire Department and Canora Ambulance were dispatched to a vehicle rollover on Highway No. 5, east of Buchanan. The driver lost control of the vehicle which went into the ditch and rolled. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and for precautionary reasons.
Canora fraud
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a fraud complaint in Canora on November 14. The victim received a phone call from a scammer indicating Walmart was advertising a senior’s discount. The victim sent $144 to the suspect to be eligible for the discount. The victim then contacted Walmart and learned they do not have a senior’s discount. Canora RCMP would like to remind the public to be wary of these types of scam phone calls and to not give out personal information or credit card information over the phone.
Preeceville assault
On November 14, Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a Preeceville assault complaint. The victim was punched in the face and sustained minor injuries. The suspect was located and arrested without incident. Assault charges were laid and the matter is now before the courts.
Hazel Dell collision
Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision on a grid road near the community of Hazel Dell on November 14. The driver struck a moose causing significant damages to their vehicle, which resulted in the vehicle being towed. The driver was not injured in the collision.
911 call in error
A local resident in Canora attempted to call the hospital on November 16 but mistakenly called 911 instead. Canora/Sturgis RCMP attended the residence and determined there was no emergency. When 911 is called by mistake please don’t hang up in panic. You can not hide from 911. Please stay on the line and provide the requested details to the call taker.
Social assistance fraud
On November 17, Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a fraud complaint in Canora. The suspect forged a letter to fraudulently obtain social assistance. The investigation is ongoing.
Driving in the ditch
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report of a vehicle driving in the ditch on November 18 in Preeceville. Members located the suspect vehicle and determined the driver was sober but was just having a bad day.
Subway theft
Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a theft complaint on November 18 from the Subway in Canora. An outside cabinet behind the restaurant was broken into and items were stolen. The investigation remains ongoing.
