The Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) is a provincial non-profit organization governed by a volunteer provincial board. The province is divided into districts with the same borders as the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Associations.

“Our district is the Parkland Valley which stretches from the Manitoba border west to Foam Lake, north to Endeavour, and south to Fort Qu’Appelle,” said Maxine Stinka, chairperson for SSFA. Each district holds a variety of events for people 55 and over.

“This year we sponsored two pickle ball clinics in Yorkton and three walking clinics in the district and district competitions in whist, shuffleboard and cribbage,” she said. “Additional competitions will be for shuffleboard in Melville, bowling in Esterhazy, Kaiser in Buchanan, track and field in Melville, golf in Canora and poetry and short story, also in Canora.

“Every second year there are provincial games as well as Canada 55 plus games. This district charges an annual membership fee of $7 that qualifies anyone 55 and over to participate in any or all of our activities,” said Stinka.

The program provides regular physical, cultural, social and intellectual activities. The benefits include enhanced activity, improved physical activity and self esteem, better physical and mental health and increased energy.
